Saturday, May 23 – Monday, May 25

Ah, the Memorial Day weekend. Few other time periods say “leisure” as much as these three days. It’s a time to kick back and do as little as you want. A barbecue?  Sure, that’s a fun way to pass some time. Or maybe you can make the first beach visit of the season. Watch a parade. Just hang out. The overriding theme is that Memorial Day weekend is a time when you CAN enjoy yourself without HAVING to do anything you don’t want to do.

Unless, that is, you work at the Major Home Improvement Retailer. Not only is the store open for business at its regular hours, but the long weekend is also one of the very busiest times of the year (I guess we can add “shopping” to the list of favorite activities). It goes without saying that I worked all three days, 8-hour shifts on Saturday and Sunday, and a 7-hour on Monday. Except for later in the day on Monday I was running around almost nonstop dealing with customers. Usually, being very busy makes a shift go by quickly.  That was not the case for these days, possibly due to some sort of law of diminishing returns. It was like the shifts would never end.

In any event, starting in June I won’t be working quite so many hours as the peak is over. I’m scheduled for 12 hours each of the first two weeks of the month. That’s about half of what I’ve been averaging.  While that means less money, it’s not a deal breaker and I’m still well above the average of 16 hours a week for the year as a whole. And hey, the prior pace wasn’t really sustainable.
